The IIJA Investment in Intelligent Transportation Systems

Through advances in and incorporation of wireless and communications based technologies, vehicles and infrastructure have become increasingly intertwined, resulting in the creation of intelligent transportation systems (ITS). The U.S.Department of Transportation (DOT) has defined an ITS as an operational system of various technologies that, when combined and managed, improve the overall system’s operating capabilities. Over the past few decades, ITS have emerged as an essential component of our transportation system, providing not only convenience but also information that can prevent potential crashes, keep traffic moving, and decrease the negative environmental impacts of the sector. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) is a monumental commitment by the U.S. government to the future of our transportation system.
